National Friends of Libraries Week: Oct. 18-24

The Friends of the Hudson Area Library is proud to announce the launch of their new logo in tandem with the 16th Annual National Friends of Libraries week, October 18-24, 2015.

As the Hudson Area Library prepares to move into the new location, the Friends are conducting their annual membership appeal during the month of October in order to continue their service and support of the library and community. The campaign, “Let’s Be Friends” invites all members of the community to join and get involved. Membership and donations to the Friends of the Hudson Area Library will help us continue to provide books and supplies in addition to programming and events to enhance library services for Hudson and our greater community.

The History Room Committee of the Hudson Area Library is pleased to welcome Bob Taylor to the library on Thursday, October 22 at 6:00pm as the guest speaker in the Hudson Area Library’s Local History Speaker Series. Mr. Taylor will discuss living at the Hudson-Athens lighthouse in the early days, built in 1874, and raising a family there. He will further compare the hardships of family life at the Hudson-Athens lighthouse with the challenges faced today by modern lighthouse keepers and preservationists.

The Best of Hudson: A Photographic Exhibition, sponsored by the Friends of the Hudson Area Library and the Columbia County Photo Club announce the opening of the Fourth Annual Photography Exhibit at the Hudson Area Library, 400 State Street, Hudson. Twenty-six members of the Columbia County Photo Club are participating in this exhibit, with over fifty images on display. All original photographs are for sale, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Friends of the Hudson Area Library. The exhibit will continue through October 20, 2015.

Local History Speaker Series Welcomes Arlene Levinson

Ms. Levinson will present the history of the Jewish community in Hudson from the late 1800’s and the founding of the Congregation Anshe Emeth.

The Friends of the Hudson Area Library and the Columbia County Photo Club announce the opening of the Fourth Annual Photography Exhibit titled The Best of Hudson: A Photographic Exhibition at the Hudson Area Library, 400 State Street, Hudson. Twenty-six members of the Columbia County Photo Club are participating in this exhibit, with over fifty images on display. An opening reception with the artists will be held on August 20th, from 5-7pm at the library and is open to the public. All original photographs will be offered for sale, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Friends of the Hudson Area Library. The exhibit will continue through October 20, 2015.

Local Beer Meets Local History

The History Room Committee of the Hudson Area Library is pleased to host an evening of Local Beer Meets Local History at The Spotty Dog Books & Ale, on Thursday, August 6th at 6:00 pm, featuring Craig Gravina, author of Upper Hudson Valley Beer. Gravina will be joined by Neil Evans, owner of CH Evans Brewing Company at the Albany Pump Station, who will discuss the history of the Evans Brewery in Hudson prior to Prohibition. Gravina will discuss other breweries operating in the area during the same time period, as well as the resurgence of brewing in the Hudson Valley.

A tasting flight featuring Evans Ales will be offered along with a pint of your choice for $15, with proceeds to benefit the ongoing preservation efforts of the local history collection at the library.

Super Summer Kids Book Sale

The Friends of the Hudson Area Library encourage kids and families to stretch their summer reading lists and come to a special two-day Super Summer Kids Book Sale. On Friday, August 7 and Saturday, August 8, the Book Sale Room will be offering thousands of children’s books at bargain prices. Open from 10am til 2pm each day at the Hudson Area Library, 400 State Street in Hudson. Books for vacation reading fun, for school or for special interests, this Super Summer Kids Book Sale will have it all!

As a special bonus, the Friends will also host a face-painting artist on Friday from 11am-1pm. This is the perfect opportunity to bring the kids to the library, stock up on great titles to encourage reading throughout the summer. Raffle tickets for a large gift basket of children’s books will also be available for purchase on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $1 each, or 6 for $5. This basket is full of great books and activities for all kids, and is valued at more than $75– a great deal!
