What Do You Want in Our New Library? – Online Survey

To enable those of you who could not participate in our new library design focus groups to provide us with feedback about what you want in the new library, we have developed an online survey.

Before You Take the Survey

Our library design consultant Kim Cullin has created a presentation, “Creating a Thriving 21st Century Library” to provide a brief overview of the activities, programs, spaces, and tools that are part of what other libraries across the country are doing to become a 21st century library. This presentation will provide you with a larger frame of reference before you fill out the online survey.

NOTE: this file has been compressed to make it easier to download. It will look fine on your computer screen but will not look very good if you print it out.

Fill Out the Survey

The survey should take you between 5 and 10 minutes to complete. If you want to stay in touch with us be sure to fill out your contact information on the survey.

Hudson Area Library Conducting Focus Groups on New Library Design

Seeking Participants to Help Design Our Library of the 21st Century

The Hudson Area Library will be conducting a series of focus groups to gather input for the design of the new library. The library has been working with Kimberly Bolan Cullin, a library design consultant, to develop a program and facilities plan for the new library. Ms. Cullin, who is a nationally recognized expert on 21st century libraries, will lead the one hour sessions. Ten to fifteen people in each focus group will hear a brief illustrated presentation on the library of the future and then have the opportunity to share their ideas about what should be included in the design of the new library.

Ms. Cullin will integrate the inputs from the ten focus groups the library is conducting and combine this with information about the Hudson Area Library and the communities it serves. This will become a facilities plan for the new library. This plan will describe the kinds of programs, spaces, space for books, DVDs, magazine, newspapers, computer terminals, and all of the other elements that we want to have in the library. This then becomes the basis for the architect to develop the plans for the actual building.

Apply By Wednesday March 21, 2012 to Participate

The focus groups will take place between Thursday and Monday, March 22 – 26, 2012, at the library at 400 State St. Hudson. Space will be limited. For more information and to apply to participate go to theFocus Group Application page

Update on the Library’s Move to the Armory

Armory 51 North Fifth St Hudson NY 12534Is the Library moving to the Armory?

Yes. Since we last reported on plans to move the library to the Armory (5th St. and State St.) a lot of progress has been made, though a great deal of hard work remains.

The GalVan Initiatives Foundation (see the Register Star article “Nonprofit’s goal: city’s improvement” -12/31/2011) owns the Armory and offered to partner with the Library in the construction of a new library within the Armory in the 10,000 sq. ft. “drill hall”. The GalVan Foundation will make a large contribution towards the construction costs and then lease the space to the library for 30 years at $12 per year.

Since the initial discussions the Board of the Library and GalVan Initiatives Foundation have held numerous meetings to develop a process to carry out this plan. This resulted in a Memorandum of Understanding between the two parties that was signed in early January 2012. This document describes the responsibilities of each party and the process to achieve the results desired.

When is this supposed to happen? Continue reading Update on the Library’s Move to the Armory

Following an initial discussion yesterday afternoon with Galvan principals T. Eric Galloway and Henry van Ameringen, Hudson Area Library President Theresa Parsons and Vice President Mark Orton have agreed to bring Galvan’s proposal to consider the Armory Building at 51 North Fifth Street as a long-term location for the Hudson Area Library to the full board at their meeting on September 14.   What is being proposed will go a long way towards providing the citizens of Hudson and Greenport with a library they can be proud of.   Continue reading Library Board To Consider Move To Armory
