FREE Computer Workshops…Sign Up Now!

Hudson Area Library will be offering two free computer workshops for those who are new to using computers. Come join us in the library computer lab on either (or both) of the following dates:

Saturday, May 18 from 10am-11:30am
Computer Basics Workshop With Ms. Cruz- Learn the basic functions of the computer, including using the mouse, keyboard and taskbar, and a brief introduction to the Internet.
Monday, June 10th from 10am-11:30am
Internet and Email Basics With Ms. Cruz- Learn how to search the Internet, and how to set up and use email.

Both classes will take place in the Hudson Area Library public computer lab. Space is limited, so call 518-828-1792 or stop by the Hudson Area Library staff office to sign up today! These workshops are made possible with support from the Friends of the Hudson Area Library.

Armory Project Update & Open House

The design of the new library at the Armory (5th and State Streets.) is almost complete. A design review was held recently in NYC with the architect Vincent Benic and his team (Winnie Moy and Lauren Printz). Dan Kent from the Galvan Foundation and Theresa Parsons, Mark Orton, and Library Director Emily Chameides attending.

With a just a few items outstanding the final cost estimates will be completed and we will be ready for the job of creating the detailed construction documents.

Construction Starts

Construction is still targeted to begin this Fall.

Mark Your Calendars: Open House at the Armory Saturday June 22, 2013

The Capital Campaign Committee of the Board of Trustees will hold an open house for the community on Saturday 6/22/13 from 11am to 2pm. People will be able to tour a layout of the new library, view large drawings and watch projections of the plans. Guides will be on hand to lead visitors through the design and explain many of its features. The event is designed for families so bring along the kids.

More information will be provided in the near future.

New Monthly Magazines Added

Eight new popular magazine subscriptions are now available for in-house (or rather, in-library!) reading, thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Hudson Area Library.

The magazines are all full color monthly subscriptions and include Bon Appetit, a magazine that has great recipes, food trends and more; Dwell, devoted to modern architecture and design; Outdoor Photographer; Outside, award winning coverage of sports, adventure, health and fitness; Poets and Writers, providing information, support, and guidance for creative writers; Rolling Stone, a bi-monthly publication that focuses on music, liberal politics and pop culture; Sports Illustrated for Kids; and Wired, a magazine that reports on how new and developing technology affects culture, the economy and politics. All titles are in the main circulation room at the Library, with the exception of SI Kids, located in the Children’s Room.

Don’t Miss the Hudson Children’s Book Festival!

Saturday, May 4th marks the day of the 5th annual Hudson Children’s Book Festival, the biggest gathering of children’s and young adult book authors and illustrators you’ve ever seen! There will be exhibitions, arts and crafts, workshops, and book readings. Also, you won’t want to miss the live performances by:

The Festival will take place at the Hudson Junior and Senior High Schools, located at 215 Harry Howard Avenue in Hudson from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free! Hudson Area Library will have a table at the Festival, so be sure to stop by and say hi!

Adopt a Book! It’s Not Too Late…

Great news! Due to popular demand, the Friends have extended the Adopt a Book deadline through May 15th! Just review our list of available titles, select a book for adoption and donate $10 to the Hudson Area Library. We’ll put you at the top of the waiting list so that you can read it first, and put a commemorative bookplate in the book honoring your donation! The general Adopt a Book donation gift is $15, but through May 15th the Friends of the Hudson Area Library are contributing $5 for each book, so the cost for the participant is only $10!

Colossal Cook Book Sale This Weekend!

Calling all home cooks, food lovers and professional chefs!

The Friends of the Hudson Area Library will be offering over 500 great cookbooks at the “Colossal Cook Book Sale” on Friday, April 26th from 1-4pm, and Saturday, April 27th from 10-2pm. This large and eclectic collection of vintage, new, and used cookbooks will be on the shelves in the Book Sale Room at the Hudson Area Library, 400 State Street in Hudson. All books will be offered at discounted prices.

Included in this large selection are quick and easy meals, baking, barbeque and grilling, gourmet, entertaining and menu guides as well as many ethnic cuisines. Cookbooks make great gifts too, whether it’s for the serious food lover or the occasional cook – you’ll be sure to find something for everyone at this great sale!

Special guest, cookbook author, columnist and professional caterer, Susan Simon will be on hand to answer all of your cooking, recipe and ingredients questions on Saturday, from 11-1:00pm. Susan has written five cookbooks and currently writes a food column for the Register Star titled “Susan Simon Says: Food for Thought”.

The Friends of the Hudson Area Library is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and proceeds from its fundraising go to the library for the acquisition of books and other media and for the development of the library’s services to the community.

Library Closed Tuesday April 23 for System Maintenance

The Hudson Area Library will be closed on Tuesday April 23 for system maintenance. The online catalog will also be unavailable on this day. We will be back up and running by Wednesday morning and will be open regular hours the remainder of the week. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Edna St. Vincent Millay Poetry Reading on April 27th

In honor of National Poetry Month, works by the great American poet, Edna St. Vincent Millay, will be read in the History Room at the Hudson Area Library on Saturday, April 27th at 1:00pm. We are pleased to present special guest speaker, Peter Bergman, who will be conducting this special poetry reading.

Mr. Bergman is the Executive Director of The Edna St. Vincent Millay Society at Steepletop in Austerlitz, NY, Millay’s home until her death in 1950. Mr. Bergman is an accomplished regional playwright, poet and author, and a frequent lecturer, speaking on local history and Millay for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute as well as theater for a host of public and private groups from New England to New York City.

The Hudson Area Library has a number of Millay’s books in its History Room collection, and excerpts from some of those will be read on Saturday, along with other works from Millay’s private collection at Steepletop. There will be a short question and answer period after the reading.

Friends of the Hudson Area Library Annual Meeting Coming Soon

The Friends of the Hudson Area Library announces its Annual Meeting to be held on Thursday, April 18th at 6:00pm at the Library. The Friends are privileged to have Lisa Dolan as guest speaker that evening. She will be discussing children’s literacy and creating a culture of literacy in the community.

Lisa is the founder of Hudson Reads, a reading mentorship program in the Hudson City School District, as well as Literacy Coach for over three decades. She co-founded and co-directs the Hudson Children’s Book Festival, the largest book festival in New York State. Lisa is also an educational consultant for New York State, serves as a board member of Investments in Youth and writes a weekly book review for the Register Star.
