Back to School Fun Night

Kids Break WeekJoin Ms. Pam in the Children’s Room on Tuesday, September 1 from 6-7pm for Back to School Fun Night! Come on in and get excited for the start of the new school year. There will be stories for the elementary set and students of all ages can decorate goal posters with ideas they have for making the 2015-2016 year the best yet. There will be a bookmark making station where kids can create their own bookmark to save their place in all those great books they will be reading this year. We’ll also have book giveaways and other fun activities to help get kids excited for the coming school year.

The service is available 24-7 for use at the library, at home, or on the go and includes a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction eBooks that you and your children will love reading (or having read to you)!

To access the collection either select the StarWalk Kids Media button on our homepage or follow this link. Our username and password are both hal (for Hudson Area Library) – we keep things simple when reading is involved!

Bengali Bandhan

bengaliJoin the Bangladeshi American Society of Hudson and library staff on Wednesdays, beginning August 5, from 6-7pm in the Children’s Room for Bengali Bandhan*, a series of programs for children and families celebrating Bengali language and culture.

Participants will be introduced to the Bengali alphabet and learn about Bangladeshi culture through shared stories, poems, songs, dance, arts and crafts, and more. The program is geared towards elementary school aged youth, but all are welcome.

*Bandhan means “togetherness”

This project has been supported by a grant from the Fund for Columbia County, a fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.

Our friends from Spark Media Project will be offering a stop-motion animation workshop for kids ages 7-12, starting Wednesday, July 29 and meeting weekly on Wednesdays through August 19. Dates: Wednesdays, July 29 through August 19, 4-6pm
Ages: 7-12
In this workshop, youth will learn the art of stop-motion animation to create a short animated video. Participants will write the story, create the backgrounds and characters, use animation software, and record voiceovers and sound effects.

In this workshop, youth will learn the entire process of filmmaking including scripting, cinematography, and editing their own narrative short films.

Make a Graphic Novel

Create your own comic! Make your own characters, dialogues, and story. Learn how to combine words and images in panels to tell a story. Led by Barbara Slate. Space is limited.

Story Hour with Special Guest, Jerrice Baptiste

JerriceBaptisteHudson Valley based poet and educator, Jerrice Baptiste, will be our special guest during Story Hour on Wednesday, January 14 at 10am. Baptiste will read from her children’s book, Tu Es Ma Belle, a poetic story about a young girl’s Haitian family tradition that ties together family living in many different places and across generations.
