Join the Bangladeshi American Society of Hudson and library staff on Wednesdays, beginning August 5, from 6-7pm in the Children’s Room for Bengali Bandhan*, a series of programs for children and families celebrating Bengali language and culture.
Participants will be introduced to the Bengali alphabet and learn about Bangladeshi culture through shared stories, poems, songs, dance, arts and crafts, and more. The program is geared towards elementary school aged youth, but all are welcome.
*Bandhan means “togetherness”
This project has been supported by a grant from the Fund for Columbia County, a fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.
The Friends of the Hudson Area Library is pleased to announce a new language learning program for adults coming soon to the library this spring. Starting April 16, this series of free classes will offer community members the opportunity to learn to read, write, and speak Mandarin Chinese from a native speaker.
The Mandarin Chinese for Beginners class will introduce students to basic vocabulary and phrases using Chinese pinyin – writing and reading phonetically using the Romanized alphabet. Students will also learn how to read and write simple Chinese characters. The class will run for 8 weeks from April 16 through June 4, meeting weekly on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7:30 at the Hudson Area Library, located at 400 State Street in Hudson.
The Library continues to expand it’s collection with a new set of 22 adult Bengali language books, made possible with support from the Friends of the Hudson Area Library and the Hudson River Bank & Trust Company Foundation. The books include novels and collections of poems, short stories, essays, and more from classic and contemporary authors such as Sukumar Ray, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Rabindranath Tagore, and Humayun Ahmed. The collection includes a bilingual (Bengali/English) version of Tagore’s Gitanjali and bilingual (Bengali/English) book titled Everyday Essential Bengali. A special thanks to Kabir and Shumu, who helped pick out the books for this collection!
The library also has copies of the Bengali language newspaper Weekly Thikana available for reading in the library. Also available for check out is our Spanish language collection, which also consists of adult fiction and non-fiction. For children, there is also a sizable collection of multilingual books in the children’s room with books in several languages including Bengali, Spanish, French, Arabic, and Japanese!
Learn to express yourself in real life situations and improve your Spanish language skills for work, travel, or just for fun! This free programs offers adult patrons of the Hudson Area Library an opportunity to develop and enhance conversational Spanish skills in a fun, mixed-level class.
