Library Celebrates Greenport’s 175th Anniversary with Greenport Historical Society

The library hosted a reception in honor of the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Town of Greenport Thursday evening (9/27/12). The event was organized by the History Room Committee of the Board of Trustees. Invited guests included the members of the Greenport Historical Society. Approximately 50 people attended. Jeff Rigby, Chair of the History Room Committee, spoke about the development of the History Room at the library. Mark Orton, President of the Board of Trustees gave an update on the Armory project. David Hart, President of the Greenport Historical Society, gave a talk about their project to renovate the Toll House on the Columbia Turnpike (see image above). He closed with a brief review of the founding of Greenport in 1837. Finally, Wendy McDaris, a member of the History Room Committee, introduced the special displays of materials in the History Room and also a collection of items shared by Viola Williams, Stockport Historian.
