Program Description: Sounds of Summer, our youth summer reading program, focuses on music, sound and books and activities on those topics. Summer Reading helps to build literacy skills while also maintaining a positive attitude towards reading and learning during summer vacation.
Date/Time: Monday – Friday, July 9 – August 10, 10am – 12pm
The Sounds of Summer is led by children’s librarian Janice Scali; Marlene Parmentier, MC Smith Intermediate teacher; and one of the newest members of our staff, Sam Gruber. This summer reading program includes stories, lessons on a variety of topics, arts and crafts projects and fun physical activities for kids! Guests, like Hudson Mayor Rick Rector, Earth Scientist Wayne Kinney and Music Teacher Patricia Almstead read and do activities with the children. This program is recommended for Pre-K to elementary school aged children, but all ages are welcome.
Youth are also invited to log their reading this summer. Each time you read a book this summer, submit your book info via our online Summer Reading Book Log or pick up a paper book log at the library, the Greenport Town Park Little Free Library or the Greenport Town Hall Little Free Library. There will be special prizes and rewards for program attendance and summer reading log entries.
workshops for tweens and teens
In addition to our daily Summer Reading Program, the Hudson Area Library Tween Advisory Council, composed of youth ages 8-12 who create and host library events for their peers, have planned DIBS (Do It Better Series). DIBS is a series of workshops that offer participants the chance to work with an expert in a specialized field to help define, refine and explore in a judgement free zone. This program will include workshops on painting with artist Jeffrey Gibson and sound exploration with Deep Listening Institute, as well as a Creative Writing & Performance workshop.
The library continues its partnership with the City of Hudson Youth Center and various art organizations and spaces in the Mid-Hudson region to offer collaborative field trips for tweens and teens. This includes Watch + Talk, a new film screening series with Basilica Hudson in collaboration with the New York International Children’s Film Festival, and a private tour of El Anatsui, the new exhibition at Jack Shainman’s The School Kinderhook.
