General Reading Book Selection: White Houses heroine Lorena “Hick” Hickok meets Eleanor Roosevelt in 1932 while reporting on Franklin Roosevelt’s first presidential campaign, and their relationship deepens and grows in the ensuing years. Hickock’s life serves as a window into the world of the Roosevelts, and her narration is colored both by her love for Eleanor and her admiration of Franklin. In writing White Houses, Amy Bloom drew inspiration especially from Hickock and Eleanor’s own correspondence, basing as much of the story as possible on recorded facts, and builds a vivid and engaging story on that foundation.
The General Reading Book Group meets monthly on Wednesdays 5-6pm and This group reads fiction and nonfiction, and is facilitated by long time member of the Friends of the Hudson Area Library, Sharon Getty.
The Nonfiction Book Group meets monthly on Mondays, 6-7:30pm. This group focuses on history and social & political life in North America, and is facilitated by library Board President Mark Orton.
