The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the entire globe in a historic way. The killing of George Floyd has sparked protests in our community, nation, and around the world as well as demands for police reform and restructuring to combat systemic racism in society. Both of these events serve as the inspiration to collect the history of our community during this time for use by future researchers. The Hudson Area Library History Room Committee invites you to submit images (photos, artwork), videos, and words (poems, stories, journal entries, personal essays) that help to document the personal experiences of our community in 2020.
Those wishing to contribute to the archive can submit work through the library’s website by following the link “Community Archiving of Local History” found underneath the main banner on the home page or by clickinghere. If you are contributing works as physical items rather than digital submissions, please also submit using the form on the website to schedule your drop-off. In keeping with the mission of the Hudson Area Library’s History Room, we request that all submissions be either from individuals who live in the library’s service area – Hudson, Greenport and Stockport – or that feature these areas as the main subject.

Program Description: We value your opinion. Please join us for a Community Conversation this summer. Members of the Library Staff and Board will meet with small groups, to ask questions about the group’s aspirations for the future of our community, and listen to ideas about how to make that vision reality.

The 1960s was a tumultuous era of marches, sit-ins, freedom rides, boycotts and rallies. Many of those who participated may have been living in our community, or later migrated here. Were YOU involved?
The Hudson Area Library is hosting a discussion for those who took part, or have first-hand knowledge of these events. We want to be a forum for those in our community to share information. Please bring photos, clippings and mementos of your involvement in the movement to the library on Thursday, February 4 at 6pm. You will be able to take them home afterwards! On Tuesday, July 14 from 10am-7pm, the Prison Public Memory Project will be hosting a Pop-Up Museum on the Library lawn. This temporary exhibit will invite the community to participate in a variety of fun and educational activities centered on the theme of Life and Work at the New York State Training School for Girls.
For almost 80 years between 1904 and 1975, Hudson was home to the New York State Training School for Girls, once the largest reform schools for girls in the United States and one of the largest employers in Columbia County. The Pop-Up Museum will offer participants the opportunity to interact with historical artifacts such as photographs, letters, and institutional records on three tables in a hands-on museum-like setting. Visitors can also engage with the Training School’s history in a variety of interactive drawing and writing activities led by Prison Public Memory Project staff and volunteers and can tell and listen to others’ stories. Community members are invited to bring any of their own photos, documents and other artifacts relating to the Training School or to the people who lived or worked there for temporary display on the museum tables. For those who wish to have a portrait taken with their artifact, a photographer will be available. Light refreshments will be served as supplies last.
In a continued effort to spread the word about fund raising efforts, this coming Saturday, June 28th, the Campaign for the Hudson Area Library will host a table at the Hudson Farmer’s Market. Representatives will be using the opportunity to discuss the new library with customers who regularly attend the market.
There will also be a raffle to give away bundled books, audio books, graphic novels and galleys for all age levels. Several of the offerings have been on display at the library for the past two weeks. A sampling includes Who Could That Be at This Hour? by Lemony Snicket, Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult, Avalon High: Volume 1 –The Merlin Prophecy by Meg Cabot, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and the audio book Danny the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl.
“We want to reach out to as many people as possible,” says Theresa Parsons, Co-chair for the Campaign. “The new library will be a major community center. The more people who know about all that we have planned, the better. And, of course, we continue to seek donations and the support of the public.
Stop by for Storytime on the Go in the courtyard at Bliss Towers (State St. and 2nd St., Hudson) this Saturday, June 21 from 10AM-2PM. The event will include stories, songs, and puppetry for children ages 0-5 and their families. FREE board books will be available to bring home!
