Summer is the time to be outdoors enjoying this great weather and the great neighbors we have in Hudson. Come join us as we spread the word about the Campaign for the new Hudson Area Library!

On August 23rd, Columbia Street, between Front and 2nd, becomes host to the Unity in the Community Block Party from noon until 5pm. The block party is hosted by our friends at the Greater Hudson Promise Neighborhood.

We’ll be raffling off an assortment of kids books (free entry!) including Big Nate Great Minds Think Alike by Lincoln Peirce, Captain Underpants and the Tyrannical Retaliation of the Turbo Toilet 2000 by Dav Pilkey, Amulet: Escape from Lucien (Vol. 6) by Kazu Kibuishi, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, and lots more. We’ll also be offering LICK ice cream gift certificates. How great is that!

Celebrate Summer! Bring the family! Learn about our progress on the new Library. Meet residents and Library lovers. This event is tailor-made for fun in the sun. We’re looking forward to meeting everyone.

Join Us in Supporting Early Literacy and Our New Library

We are launching our first crowdfunder this week on Indiegogo! The focus is the Early Literacy Storytime Nook to be located in the turret of the Hudson Armory when the library moves in 2015. The video below, filmed at the library by Lauren Keenan, emphasizes the benefits of reading aloud to even the youngest infants.

We hope you’ll take a look at the campaign and help us raise $5,000 (or more!) so that we can furnish this space designed to help our children learn and grow. Please also share this link with all your friends through social media: hudsonarealibrary.org/storytime/

Kids Learn about Nutrition and Food Science at the Library!

Created with Nokia Smart Cam
The library’s “Fizz, Boom, Read!” summer programming for youth kicked off with “Food Scientists,” a two-day program taught by Cornell Cooperative Extension Nutrition Educator Jaime O’Donnell.

Created with Nokia Smart CamThe kids learned that celery sitting in a cup of food coloring will draw the color into its stalk and that vinegar and baking soda create a foamy fizz. They also learned why sugar is bad for one’s body and took turns measuring how much sugar is in soda and energy drinks. Ms. Jaime finished up the program by helping the kids make healthy strawberry banana smoothies.

Thank you to Ms. Jaime for kicking off our summer children’s events with such a fun and educational program!
